Observation
Have you ever noticed that almost anyone will take the time to comment on the weather? Total strangers have delightful encounters centered around weather. It's such a brilliantly benign topic. It definitely can come in useful in the retail world.

So, um, are you calling us "almost anyone," or "total strangers"? :) Just kidding. :)But you're right. And I'm guilty of using it as conversation when I'm stuck for what to say.
Another good retail topic: Football. At Starbucks all I had to say was, "So, did you see the game the other night?" Everyone thought I was great.
